The University of Vilnius, one of the oldest and most famous establishments of higher education in Eastern and Central Europe, was founded in 1579. Functioning for a long time as the only school of higher learning in Lithuania, it was a preserver of cultural and scientific traditions, and has played a significant part in the cultural life not only of Lithuania, but the neighboring countries as well.

The institution comprises 8 faculties - those of Physics and Technology; Natural Sciences, History, Lithuanian Philology; Mathematics; Pedagogy and Psychology; Slavonic Philology and Foreign Languages. The studies are liberalized, and students have a relative freedom to choose curricular subjects at their wish.

Kaunas University of Medicine is the largest institution of medical education and training in Lithuania. Principal teaching language is Lithuanian. Foreign students are instructed in English. They are also taught Lithuanian language, so that they were able to pass on to the study of clinical subjects in principal language from 4th year of education.

Klaipeda University, being one of the youngest among Lithuanian university level high schools, gives its priorities to education of the intellectual society and person. SU cooperates with over 70 foreign higher education institutions under the Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci, Youth, Nordic Council of Ministries, Equal, Phare, Eureka, and FP6 programmes. Close contacts are maintained and bilateral agreements have been signed with many foreign countries institutions of higher education.

We have signed an important agreement with the other higher schools in Kaunas to expand educational possibilities at the University. Students may now attend lectures in other higher schools and their examination and credits taken elsewhere are recognized and counted. This is a very important step toward the concept of an open university.
